Northport attempted kidnapping suspect identified, arrested | News

NORTHPORT, AL (WBRC)- Northport Police have identified and charged a man suspected of trying to kidnap an 80-year-old woman yesterday.
Police say Stedman Ramon Cooper, of Gordo, put a knife to the throat of the elderly woman and demanded that she drive him in her car. He slipped into the backseat of her vehicle while she was in a shopping center parking lot in the 5700 block of McFarland Blvd. in Northport. The incident happened around 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 28.
The 80-year-old woman managed to get the knife away from Cooper and started blowing her horn, Sgt. Brent Blankley with Tuscaloosa Police said. The suspect fled from the car on foot.
Tuesday, police released surveillance images of the man believed to the the suspect and asked the public for help in identifying him.
Gordo police found Cooper in the Pickens County town of Gordo. He is currently being held in the Pickens County Jail on unrelated charges. Northport Police have obtained a warrant for first degree kidnapping against him.
On their Facebook page, the Northport Police Department thanked the public for their assistance in identifying Cooper.
