Hale Co. man charged in 50-year-old woman's murder

AKRON, AL (WBRC)- Hale County investigators have arrested a suspect in the murder of a 50-year-old woman and attempted murder of a 66-year-old man.

Deputies with the Hale County Sheriff's Office responded to a shooting on 5th Ave. S. in Akron around 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 21.

Chief Deputy Jason McCrory says they found the victim, Deanese Myles of Akron, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. A man from Moundville, 66-year-old Clifford Davis, had also been shot once.

The Hale County coroner pronounced Deanese Myles dead on the scene. Davis was treated at DCH Regional Medical Center for his injuries.

After gathering information from witnesses, deputies took 53-year-old Charles Myles of Akron into custody without incident in connection to the shooting.

Charles Myles has been charged with capital murder and attempted murder. He's being held in the Hale County Jail on no bond.

Alabama Power warns customers of bill scam

BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC)- Alabama Power is warning customers about a phone scam.

Officials say someone is calling customers, telling them their power will be shut off at a certain time if they don't pay. The customers are told to go an buy a reloadable debit card and are given a deadline to pay. When the customer buys the card and calls back with the information, the card is quickly emptied.

Alabama Power officials say, unfortunately, some people have already been duped.

"The thing we want to remind our customers is: that's not the way we do business. If you have every have any question...hang up the phone and call [the utility company]," Ike Pigott said.

West Ala. authorities launch 'Click it or Ticket' campaign

NORTHPORT, AL (WBRC)- Five people died in two separate car crashes in Greene County this month. That's why Sheriff Jonathan Benison is pleading with West Alabama drivers to buckle up.

"I would like to encourage the loved ones, to tell their loved ones to buckle up so we can save lives," Benison said to a room full of listeners on Monday.

Benison told fellow officers at the 'Click it or Ticket' meeting that those five deaths are more than the four people who died in crashes there all of last year. Last week, eight people were inside an SUV before it left the road and hit a tree.

"Some of those were not properly restrained," Benison mentioned. Four of them died.

Wells Fargo announces heavy support in Civil Rights anniversary

BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC)- Wells Fargo announces plans to support a wide variety of programs and events as part of Birmingham's 50th Anniversary of the Civil Rights Movement. They plan to help seven specific groups this year as part of the city's "50 Years Forward" effort.

Representatives from the different organizations were at the press conference this morning. Some of their plans this year include providing college scholarships through the 16th Street Baptist Church Foundation, sponsoring the re-print of the A.G. Gaston book "Green Power," supporting educational programs at the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute and sponsoring Juneteenth Culture Fest at the BCRI on June 1st.

Troopers release names of 4 killed in Greene Co. wreck

GREENE COUNTY, AL (WBRC)- State troopers have released the names of the four people killed in a wreck in Greene County Wednesday afternoon.

Eight people were traveling in a 2004 Ford Explorer that left the roadway and flipped over before hitting a tree. The wreck happened around 4:15 p.m. on U.S. 11 at mile marker 52 about five miles south of Knoxville, Ala. No other vehicles were involved.

Officials say several of the people inside the SUV were related. They had just left a family in Boligee and were headed back to Tuscaloosa when the wreck happened.

A two-year-old was among the dead. Troopers say no one was wearing a seatbelt and child restraints were not used.

Troopers have listed the fatalities as:

-The driver, 21-year-old Justin Coleman of Alexander City

-Demetria Aaron, 30 of Tuscaloosa

-Latrice Robertson, 22 of Tuscaloosa

-Ziliyah Robertson, 2 of Tuscaloosa

One killed in accident in Clay County

BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC)- The Alabama Department of Public Safety says one person was killed on Wednesday evening after being involved in a crash.

41-year-old Wesley Byrd Jr. of Alexandria was traveling in a tractor trailed when it struck another vehicle on AL-77 near Ashland in Clay County around 5:15 p.m.

Byrd was fatally injured in the accident. Information on the other driver was not released.
